Streetcars

Getting around New Orleans by streetcar is a great way to see the city. There are three different lines: St. Charles, Canal Street, and the Riverfront, each of which originates Downtown but takes you to different parts of the city.

One-way fares can be paid with exact change when you board. One, 3 and 5-day unlimited ride passes are also available. See the Regional Transit Authority (RTA)‘s website for a list of places to purchase these. Please note that passes are non-refundable and non-replaceable.

Standard Fares

The standard fare for a one-way trip on a bus or streetcar is $1.25.

Transfers

Transfers cost 25 cents each and are good for two hours on any bus or streetcar that continues your trip. You need to buy your transfer from the bus driver or streetcar conductor at the time you board and pay your fare.

Transfers cannot be used for a return trip along your original route. If you wish to make a return trip, even if it’s within the two-hour period, you will need to pay another one-way fare.

Children’s Fares

Children 2 years of age and under ride free. A full fare must be paid for any children 3 years of age and older.

Senior Citizens’ Fares

Senior citizens 65 years of age and older pay 40 cents to ride the bus or streetcar, and transfers are free. You must present to the bus driver or streetcar conductor an ID that proves your age in order to qualify for the lower fare. International riders just need to show their passport. See Reduced Fares for more information.

Disabled Riders

Disabled riders and Medicare cardholders can ride standard RTA buses for 40 cents and can get transfers for free. Before being allowed to pay this reduced fare or get free transfers, they first must apply with the RTA to receive a special ID card. When boarding, show this card to the bus driver or streetcar conductor. Then, you can pay the discounted fare.

For more information on riding with a disability and to apply for an ID card, please visit the How to Ride with a Disability page.

Paratransit

For those disabled riders who do not have the mobility to access standard RTA buses and streetcars, the RTA offers a shared-ride, curb-to-curb paratransit program. A one-way fare on this service costs $2.00. For more information, please visit the Paratransit page.
