Downtown Development District Celebrates 50 Years by Honoring Legacy Businesses
NEW ORLEANS — As the Downtown Development District (DDD) continues to mark its 50th anniversary, the organization is proud to recognize a group of enduring ground-floor retail businesses that have helped define the character and vitality of Downtown New Orleans for decades.
The DDD Legacy Award honors locally rooted businesses that have been in continuous operation for 50 years or more — a milestone that reflects longevity and a deep commitment to the Downtown community. The DDD will continue to recognize additional legacy businesses throughout the summer as part of its 50th-anniversary celebration.
The honorees include:
- Acme Oyster House
- Adler’s
- Duplantier Fine Framing
- Ernst Café
- Fischer’s Jewelry
- Jimani Bar
- Leni’s Café
- Majoria’s Commerce Restaurant
- Meyer The Hatter
- Mother’s Restaurant
- Professional Sport Shop
- Rubensteins
- Serio’s PoBoys
- The Watch and Clock Shop
Together, these businesses represent generations of investment and serve as anchors of Downtown’s economic and cultural life. Notably, the vast majority are multigenerational, family-owned enterprises — a distinction that speaks to the deep roots, continuity, and sense of stewardship that define Downtown New Orleans. From iconic restaurants and bars to specialty retailers and service providers, each has played a vital role in shaping the street-level experience that makes Downtown unique.
“Downtown thrives because of the businesses that choose to stay, grow, and invest here year after year,” said Seth Knudsen, President and CEO of the Downtown Development District. “As we celebrate 50 years of DDD, it’s only fitting that we honor the businesses that have been here alongside us — creating jobs, serving residents and visitors, and contributing to the distinct energy and identity of Downtown New Orleans.”
The Legacy Award highlights the importance of ground-floor retail in creating a vibrant, walkable downtown. These long-standing establishments not only contribute to the local economy but also foster a sense of continuity and place that connects generations of New Orleanians.
As the DDD looks ahead to the next 50 years, it remains committed to supporting a strong, diverse retail environment that builds on this legacy and welcomes new businesses and opportunities downtown.
