PARK(ing) Day

$1,000 to Best Design Proposals for Temporary Public Spaces

The DDD along with New Orleans Arts District and Tulane City Center have issued an open call to artists, designers, architects, urban planners and local activists to submit design proposals to be constructed for New Orleans’ PARK Day. PARK Day is an annual, open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK” spaces: temporary public places. PARK Day NOLA will take place on Julia Street, between Convention Center Blvd. and St. Charles Ave. on October 4, during Art for Arts’ Sake. Click here to check out the photos from previous PARK Days in New Orleans.

The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world. The event is a chance to reclaim and activate our city, providing a new territory for creative experimentation and activism. We hope PARK Day will cultivate the sense of civic pride, improve our city’s local urban environment, incubate new urban programs, and evolve the way we think about the design and craft of urban placemaking. As part of an initiative to activate public space in New Orleans Downtown area, hosting PARK Day on Julia Street adjacent to art galleries seeks to draw participants from the New Orleans Convention Center events to engage with the city’s contemporary art and design scene. For submission Guidelines and Requirements, visit www.parkingdaynola.com.

Deadline for proposals is August 29.
