The Value of Academic Medical Centers to the Community and Business Development

The DDD is proud to present Dr. E Gordon Gee, President of West Virginia University, as guest speaker at our 2017 Downtown NOLA Awards to be held Friday, September 22 at the Roosevelt New Orleans to speak on the topic: “The Value of Academic Medical Centers to the Community and Business Development.” Dr. Gee is President at WVU, and has served as President at The Ohio State University, Brown University, The University of Colorado, and as Chancellor at Vanderbilt University. The luncheon will be held from Noon to 1:30pm, with networking and cocktails before from 11:00am to 11:45am.

As President of West Virginia University, Dr. Gee has been at the forefront of the success of the WVU Medical Center, which Vizient ranked as the 6th top academic medical center nation-wide of more than 200 participating academic medical centers and community hospitals. The rankings took into consideration the medical center’s mortality rate, safety, efficiency, effectiveness, patient centeredness, and equity.

WVU Medicine unites the physicians and scientists of the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center with the hospitals, clinics, and health professionals of the West Virginia University Health System. WVU Medicine boasts 60 research labs and a $61.3 million investment in research spending last year. The University’s Medical Center is the largest private employer in the state of West Virginia, with 15,695 employees.

Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University has been rated one of “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News for 24 consecutive years. Seven of Wexner Medical Center’s specialties were nationally ranked by U.S. News as tops in the nation. Fewer than 1% of hospitals in the country achieve this honor. WMC cares for more than 1.5 million patients each year and provides more than $170 million in charity care and community support.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center was rated by U.S. News the #1 Hospital in Tennessee and #1 in Audiology nationwide, along with multiple other honorable mentions. VUMC is ranked in the top 50 cardiovascular hospitals in the U.S. by Truven Health Analytics, and is among the top 10 awardees for medical research by the National Institutes of Health.
